AMC = Outdoors + People. I have heard that representation from AMC staff, and lately it has become clearer for me. From a gathering of Chapter Executive Committee members and activity leaders and our upcoming member appreciation event, to trail work, group hikes/bikes/paddles/climbs, and family activities, the theme of the intersection between the outdoors and the people who enjoy and protect it is apparent, and we often hear members express the joy in both. Here's hoping that you find your intersection, including in AMC and Chapter offerings. Read on for some perfect opportunities! Diane Jones, Western MA Chapter Chair

Member Appreciation Picnic

August 25, 2024
Please join us for an afternoon of camaraderie and fun with AMC Western MA Chapter members on Sunday, August 25, 2024 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the AMC Noble View Outdoor Center in Russell, MA. We want to show our appreciation to our members who support our mission of conservation, recreation, and access to the outdoors, and who participate and volunteer in the many activities the Chapter offers.
The afternoon will include getting to know fellow members, enjoying light appetizers and snacks, hearing about the AMC and Chapter history and upcoming activities, a gear swap, and hiking around the beautiful trails of Noble View. We will also have some AMC giveaways available while supplies last! And feel free to come early or stay late to relax and enjoy the view. We look forward to seeing you there!

Volunteers Improve a Moldering Privy on the Appalachian Trail on Mt. Greylock

Supporting conservation and recreation
The Chapter's A.T. volunteers Cosmo, Josh, Julianna, Kevin, and Aaron; folks from the local National Guard unit; and a kindly A.T. section hiker, carried supplies and tools up a steep, one-mile trail from the Jones Nose parking area to the campground at Mt. Greylock on Sunday, July 21. The group improved the existing moldering privy to make it more effective in breaking down waste.
Moldering privies break down human waste more quickly than traditional pit toilets because they're above ground which allows air to circulate through. Because the existing crib is relatively shallow, and the site sees heavy use and relatively cool conditions, it has not been as effective at composting. The volunteers added a third bin that will offer extra time for the critters to do their thing, turning human waste into compost.
Many thanks to all who helped with this important project, supporting conservation and recreation! If you want to learn more about how you can get involved in volunteer work projects with the Chapter, as well as recreational opportunities, visit our activities page.

Family Art Hike and Scavenger Hunt

Join us for a family-friendly hike, art project, and scavenger hunt at Mt. Tom
This event is co-sponsored by the AMC Western MA Family Programs Committee and the New England Scenic Trail. We will meet at the Visitor Center near the playground, and will offer a slower-paced walk up to Goat Peak, with a beautiful vista of the famous Oxbow on the Connecticut River. A second moderate hike will be offered that will take the New England Trail north to the same spot, approximately one mile round trip for both. Returning to the playground pavilion, we will offer an art project that will display something participants saw or felt on the adventure.
As a bonus, we will be joined by the Mt. Tom summer park interpreter, Brianna Hannigan, who will share her knowledge of the flora and fauna on this beautiful peak. Snacks and lemonade will be provided. This event is free and all are welcome.
