Volunteer Opportunities
AMC volunteers get people outdoors and help them gain experience and expertise in protecting the natural places we love. Volunteers also support activities, programs, and goals throughout the region.
Types of Volunteering at AMC
AMC volunteers range from informational speakers, program guides and committee members to trip leaders, camp stewards, and trail minders. The Western MA Chapter is organized into activity committees, each of which operates semi-independently. Volunteer positions vary by committee and include chair, vice-chair, secretary, and treasurer, committee chairs, and coordinators.
Information volunteers greet guests, orient them to the facility, and offer advice about hiking trails, outdoor gear, and activity programming. They also provide information about conservation and natural history, and promote the AMC mission and membership.
Program volunteers assist trip leaders with multi-day programs, such as Member Welcome Weekends and Chapter training workshops.
Volunteer speakers offer evening programs for lodge guests and visitors and presentations during special events such as FallFest, gatherings, and workshops.
Volunteers of the Western Massachusetts Chapter maintain the Appalachian Trail and the New England Scenic Trail in Massachusetts. Volunteers maintain trails by working on directed group projects or by adopting a 2-4 mile section and working individually. Other volunteer opportunities exist to monitor corridor boundary lands or natural or cultural heritage resources. Contact the trail committees to learn more or volunteer. By volunteering for trail work, you combine your passion for being outdoors with protecting the environment. Give back to the trails you enjoy with this hands-on opportunity.
Volunteer naturalists draw on their own expertise to provide outreach at Noble View Outdoor Center. Naturalist programming includes leading evening programs and nature walks. Volunteer Naturalists may also help guests with activity planning, orient them to the facility, and offer advice about hiking trails, outdoor gear, and backcountry safety.
Whether out on a day trip or leading a backcountry expedition, trip leaders take on many roles at once, from decision-making and group dynamics to risk management and conservation practices. Trip leaders are required to be AMC members and possess experience and proficiency in their selected activity. Not only will you provide a much-needed service to your community, but you'll also make many life-long friendships as an AMC trip leader.
