[28‑Nov‑2024] We are grateful for many things here in the Western MA Chapter: the opportunity to create experiences with others who love the outdoors; the change of seasons that bring us spring flowers, warm sunshine, vivid fall colors, and dazzling snow; the gorgeous hills and mountains with miles of trails; and the multitude of rivers and lakes. A.T. Closed Due to Wildfire
[23‑Nov‑2024] Due to the wildfire in Great Barrington, the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) is officially closed in the area. The fire has crossed the trail north to south about a half mile west of the Tom Leonard Shelter.

Tuesday Hikers on the A.T.
[21‑Nov‑2024] It was another gorgeous fall day this week for the Tuesday Hiking Group's adventure on the A.T. in Great Barrington, with lovely views of Benedict Pond and the surrounding mountains. Unfortunately, they were also able to see smoke from the wildfire nearby. Hopefully the week's rain will help slow the spread. See what's next for the group and make a plan to join in.

Bows Together
[10‑Nov‑2024] All Out Adventures and the Western MA Chapter held a paddling event recently to share techniques for people to help themselves or others with mobility issues continue to paddle. This last paddle event of the season was held on a perfect fall day in October on Benedict Pond in Beartown State Forest in Great Barrington.
Westfield River Waterfront Cleanup
[09‑Nov‑2024] Thirty enthusiastic volunteers joined the Chapter's Conservation volunteer, Heather Wyman, in a clean-up of the area along the Westfield River near the River Street levee in West Springfield Sunday afternoon. This annual event has made a huge impact in the area by removing large amounts of trash along the river. November StoryWalk®
[06‑Nov‑2024] This month's StoryWalk® is "Keepunumuk: Weeachumun's Thanksgiving Story" written by Danielle Greendeer, Anthony Perry and Alexis Bunten, and illustrated by Garry Meeches Sr. – all Native Americans. This beautifully written and illustrated book tells the story of weechaumun (corn) and the first Thanksgiving to two children from the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe. Come on up to Noble View and read this lovely story as you walk our new accessible trail.

Bill Fogel is Appie of the Year
[30‑Oct‑2024] Bill Fogel received the Appie of the Year award at Friday's Annual Meeting and Celebration. The Appie of the Year award recognizes outstanding sustained commitment in service and leadership in the Western MA Chapter.
2024 Annual Meeting
[29‑Oct‑2024] The Western MA Chapter held its first in-person annual meeting and celebration since 2019 at the Summit View Banquet and Meeting House Friday with a social hour, delicious buffet, volunteer recognition and a guest speaker, Karen Foster, the Executive Director of All Out Adventures.
During the Annual Business Meeting, the work of the Chapter for the past year was highlighted by Diane Jones, Chapter Chair and the new slate of officers and Committee Chairs was voted on.

October Volunteer Spotlight

Management Committee since January 2023, a member of the Chapter's Executive Committee since January 2021, an AMC Hike Leader since 2023, and a trail maintainer since 2009.
Tuesday Hiking Group Celebrates 25 Years!
[03‑Oct‑2024] Mother Nature provided perfect fall weather and scenery as the Chapter's Tuesday Hiking Group gathered for the 25th anniversary hike at Chesterfield Gorge. The 6-mile hike along the East Branch of the Westfield River was followed by a potluck lunch.

All For Fall
[01‑Oct‑2024] It was a perfect fall day as we celebrated the new All Person's Trail at the AMC Noble View Outdoor Center in Russell this weekend. The day started with expressions of appreciation from AMC and local officials for the professional trail crew and volunteers who worked for two years to build the trail, and to those who provided grant funding, including the Springfield Water Commission and the Massachusetts Department of Recreation.

Spot Invasive Insects: A Massachusetts BioBlitz

They are asking participants to pick a spot in Massachusetts where trees are growing, and record all the living things you see on or near those trees with a focus on host plants of spotted lanternfly and Asian longhorned beetle. [25‑Sep‑2024] The weather looks perfect for Saturday's event at Noble View in Russell! The day will start with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new All Persons Trail at 10:00 am, including some comments about the trail, followed by a walk on the trail and some refreshments in the Double Cottage.
A Fortuitous Encounter
[24‑Sep‑2024] Kevin Pelosky, Chair of the Chapter's NET Committee, a NET thru hiker (Jonathan, aka Money Maker), and Jeannette Pierce, Chapter Communications Chair, coincidentally ended up at the same spot on Section 6 of the New England National Scenic Trail at Mt. Tom on Saturday. Kevin was clearing a blow down, Jeannette was hiking with her son, and Jonathan was on his thru hike to Mt. Monadnock.
Forest Carbon, AMC's Maine Woods and Net Zero

[22‑Sep‑2024] Forests remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store carbon as organic matter in wood and soil. They also provide an important renewable resource that can replace the more carbon-intensive steel and concrete in buildings.
