It's National Invasive Species Awareness Week
[26‑Feb‑2025] Invasive species threaten the Appalachian Trail's (A.T.) native plants and ecosystems, but there's a lot we can do to help! In recognition of National Invasive Species Awareness Week (Feb. 24-28), check out the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's blog post to learn about five common invasive species you might encounter on the A.T. and simple steps you can take to reduce their spread. From pulling garlic mustard (photo by Heather Wyman) to squashing spotted lanternflies, every action counts in protecting the Trail's ecology. ATC »

20s/30s at Notchview
[24‑Feb‑2025] After several tries, the weather finally cooperated for the Worcester and Western MA Chapter's 20s/30s members to gather at Notchview for a day of cross-country skiing. The weather was perfect for exploring miles of trails and socializing during lunch break in the cozy lodge! This event will happen again on March 8th. MORE PHOTOS »

Snow as a Protective Blanket: Saving Snow in the Northeast

[23‑Feb‑2025] Winters in our region from Maine to Virginia have changed. We've lost three weeks of winter weather and snow cover in the Northeast over the last 100 years. Massachusetts has lost 27 days of snow cover. Our cold-weather conditions are drastically changing. Vacation Week Family Skating
[19‑Feb‑2025] We had a great turnout for the free vacation week family skating and pizza party at Amelia Park yesterday, sponsored by the Chapter's Family Programs Committee in collaboration with the Russell Public Library. Seventeen children and twelve adults came to skate and enjoy some pizza, and each child took home a book courtesy of the library. Visit our activities page to keep informed of future events. NET Collaboration
[18‑Feb‑2025] In line with AMC's mission to make the outdoors accessible to more people, we participated in our first collaboration with the New England National Scenic Trail (NET), All Out Adventures, and the DCR Universal Access Program on Saturday, February 15th with a snowshoe hike for people with disabilities.

The Black Heritage Trail
[15‑Feb‑2025] In honor of Black History Month, we'd like to share this interactive map of the Black Heritage Trail, a 1.6-mile, self-guided walk through the heart of Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood. Most sites along the trail are private residences, however, the final two stops, the Abiel Smith School and the African Meeting House, are part of the Museum of African American History which is open to the public. On the map, click or tap on the icons to learn more about the locations on the Trail, then gather the kids or friends and head to Boston for a great way to spend some time during vacation week.

Share this Valentine with the World
[15‑Feb‑2025] In western MA, we rely on the National Park Service to help us maintain the MA sections of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and the New England National Scenic Trail. We have hundreds of volunteers putting in thousands of hours each year and tens of thousands of hikers that love to hike on these two trail systems.

What Hikers Wished They Knew Before Their Journey

Eyes to the Skies
[05‑Feb‑2025] Under cold, clear skies 60 people gathered to see the rare line up of six planets through telescopes from the Noble View property overlooking Westfield and Springfield. The group warmed up inside the Double Cottage with hot cocoa and a fire in the wood stove. Thank you to Nan Mack, the Noble View Caretaker, and all the volunteers who made this event such a big success!

New Art Trail in the Works
[04‑Feb‑2025] Plans are underway to create an outdoor path to the arts: a 9.3-mile bicycling and pedestrian route in the northern Berkshires of western MA. The path will allow access to the Clark Art Institute, Williams College Museum of Art, Mass Moca, the Adams Theater, art galleries, hotels and other cultural and historic destinations. Becket Quarry Hike
[28‑Jan‑2025] The Tuesday hikers explored Becket Quarry today on a four mile hike under beautiful blue skies! Becket Quarry features an abandoned granite excavation containing trucks, derricks and other remnants of the mining operations that occurred there from the 1860s to the 1940s.

We Are Hiring!
[16‑Jan‑2025] Starting in Spring of 2025, Noble View Outdoor Center will provide staff housing for AMC Southern New England seasonal trail crews and serve as a hub for trail volunteer programming and a training center for regional conservation partners. Wildlife Tracking at Noble View
[13‑Jan‑2025] Jim Pelletier, the Natural Resouces Coordinator on the Chapter's Appalachian Trail Management Committee, led a wildlife tracking hike at Noble View on Saturday as light snow fell. Outdoor Recreation Bill Signed Into Law
[12‑Jan‑2025] At the beginning of December, we asked our followers to call their representatives in Congress to urge them to support the Explore Act. On January 6th, President Biden signed the bill, after passing both houses of Congress with bipartisan support.

Tuesday Hikers Brave Chilly Weather
[10‑Jan‑2025] The Tuesday hiking group braved chilly temperatures and biting winds as they hiked near Chesterfield Gorge on Tuesday. The Chapter hikes every Tuesday unless extreme weather necessitates a cancelation. MassDOT to Build Wildlife Bridge Over Mass Pike
[09‑Jan‑2025] As you may have heard on the news, the MA Department of Transportation has received 1.7 million dollars to build a wildlife bridge across the Mass Pike in Becket. What you might not know, is that the Chapter's Appalachian Trail Management Committee has been involved in the project for the past year.

Waterfall Wednesday
[08‑Jan‑2025] Waterfall Wednesday brought to you by Wacohnah Falls in Dalton. This was taken on December 31 after heavy weekend rain. This waterfall is easy to access from the parking lot in Dalton, just a short walk to the falls and picnic area. If you want to get in a hike, there's a trail that goes steeply uphill next to the falls, then flattens out a beautiful reservoir. VIDEO »

This one-day event will include a full schedule of learning opportunities, a delicious lunch in the Four Points Ballroom with a presentation of AMC awards, the Annual Business Meeting for AMC members, and a fun social hour.

It has three seasons of episodes that describe the history of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.). It features episodes about how the trail came to be, becoming a National Park, highlighting some of the iconic locations on the trail, and interesting stories about people who have hiked the trail. Natural Holiday Decorations Workshop
[14‑Dec‑2024] Last week's Natural Holiday Decorations Workshop at the AMC Noble View Outdoor Center was enjoyed by young and old alike. A group of students from the University of Rhode Island's Outing Club joined in after spending the weekend in the Double Cottage. Families, young adults and some not so young adults, also joined in the fun!

Appalachian Trail Reopens
[12‑Dec‑2024] Effective immediately: the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has reopened the Appalachian Trail at East Mountain State Forest after it was closed in November due to wildfire activity. The public should remain vigilant when in the state forest, be aware of the potential for damaged or fallen trees, report any downed trees to park staff or to mass.parks@mass.gov, and report any fire activity to local emergency services. Winter Season Opens at Noble View
[07‑Dec‑2024] Winter season for lodging at the Noble View Outdoor Center in Russell is here! Now through March 23, 2025 you can rent the large Double Cottage or the smaller North Cottage. Winter tent sites are also available.
Stop HR 9495!
[05‑Dec‑2024] Massachusetts residents: tell Senator Chuck Schumer to stop HR 9495, a bill that the House just passed that would give the incoming Trump administration unprecedented power to silence organizations it doesn't like by revoking their non-profit status and shutting them down. This bill will have devastating effects on non-profits fighting for climate fairness like the AMC.

Hiking During Hunting Season
[04‑Dec‑2024] We're in the middle of shotgun season in Massachusetts - November 29 through December 9. Remember to wear orange when out in the woods. No hunting allowed on Sundays.

Indigenous Voices on the New England Trail
[02‑Dec‑2024] Archeologist Jay Levy recently led an interpretive hike of the National New England National Scenic Trail (NET) with AMC's NET Coordinator Miriam Maistelman, and Joshua Carter, the Executive Director of the Mashantucket Pequot Museum. Funded by a donation from Athletic Brewing Company, AMC is working with Levy to identify culturally important Indigenous sites on the NET in Massachusetts.
